Obviously we need to start off with a quick qualification that, as with all things, alcohol may be good for some people, but only in moderation. Indeed, if you look back through history, alcoholic drinks of various types have tended to be used for medicinal purposes even if only as an anesthetic or more generally as a painkiller. Of course, there were the side effects which made people feel pretty good while they were drinking. Shame about the hangovers, but that’s always been an excuse to drink some more. Which leads us into the battle over Prohibition and then to today’s mixed culture. Some counties in Alabama are still dry, while Connecticut still bans the sale of alcohol on Sundays.

Putting this in context, there’s reasonably good quality scientific evidence that drinking a glass of red wine everyday is good for your heart and, more recently, clear evidence in a clinical trial with 2,000 participants, that it’s good for people diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Yes, our brave volunteers sacrificed everything in this test and, to their joy, discovered the swelling and inflammation in their joints were reduced and they could move around more easily. Put another way, if you drink a modest amount every day, it will act as a preventive. Fewer people will develop arthritis.
Is it effective to use both a little wine every dinner and Prednisone?

This would be the best possible news were it not for two small problems. If you drink regularly, this can cause a number of more serious diseases than arthritis. Secondly, if you are drinking regularly, you cannot take Prednisone. The combination makes liver damage more likely. So now you have the choice laid out fairly for you to see. If you are beginning to develop rheumatoid arthritis, you could make life easier for yourself by drinking a little alcohol every day. Or you can follow your doctor’s no doubt sincere recommendation for Prednisone. As drugs you, it does what it says. But remember that once you start drinking alcohol, it rules out the corticosteroids for quite a long time. You cannot chop and change between the two.
